About Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa
Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa is located on Cable Beach on the north shore of Nassau, New Providence Island in the Bahamas.  Sandals is a couples only resort, so the girls don't have to deal with vultures like me.  No kids allowed either. Cable Beach got its name from the phone and fiber optic cables that come in from Florida.  This one mile stretch of beach also houses other major resorts such as the Radisson Cable Beach Golf Resort, Nassau Marriot Resort & Crystal Palace Casino, Nassau Beach Hotel, and the SuperClubs Breezes Resort.  In our opinion Sandals and the Marriot were the nicest looking resorts along Cable Beach.  The Radisson looked too corporate, like an office building with no patios.

Warning about "view descriptions" of hotel rooms
These terms are really abused here in Florida.  Beach hotels typically have Ocean View, Ocean Front View, and Garden View.  If your room is a garden view, you can't see the ocean, only trees, a parking lot, or the dumpster.  Ocean View means you see some ocean from your room.  But your room could be across the street from the beach on the back side of the building and if you can see the ocean from part of your patio, it qualifies as ocean view.  Ocean Front means your room is directly facing the beach with probably the best view possible.  The higher up you go, the better your view.  You're paying good money for your resort package, so pay attention to exactly where your room will be and exactly what view you are getting.  Salespeople will try to confuse you with these loose definitions to make you think you're getting a "room with a view". Make sure it is in writing what view you are getting, and what their definition of that view is.  Your definition will always be different from the marketing geniuses at the hotel.

Car Rentals In The Bahamas
Don't do it!  DO NOT DO IT! They drive on the other side of the road like England, and it's too confusing to keep up with it, especially with all the rotaries and divided driveways.  Besides, the traffic is a nightmare, particularly where all the action is and where are you going to park?  It just makes better sense to take a taxi or bus, it will save you time and money.  Then you can just sit back and enjoy the ride without making wrong turns.

Friendliest people are from the Bahamas. No problem, Man!
The people in the Bahamas are the nicest, friendliest, most helpful people.  Bus drivers aren't just drivers, they give you tips. history lessons, point out spots of interest, and they'll strike up an interesting conversation with you.  Ferry boat captains don't just ferry you, they point out what famous person owns the house you're boating by, they give you interesting facts and point out all the movie filming locations, and they do it with a nice blend of humor.  Their #1 one priority is to make your stay as pleasant as possible.  I think they were having more fun than we were!

Those Taxing Taxis!
Some taxi drivers are great friendly honest people, while others are scum bags that ruin it for all of them.  The problem is, taxis don't have meters.  We missed the hourly free shuttle from Sandals to the Crystal Palace Casino 1 mile away.  One cab arrived and asked $5 for the entire group of 6 people before us. We could not fit so we took the next one.  No one asked up front, a crucial financial error in taxi dollars.  We arrived at Crystal Palace one mile away 3 minutes later and the driver demanded $18 for the 6 of us!  For a 1 mile drive!  I was fuming, but we anted up, and one old man swore like a sailor at this guy, telling him exactly what he thought of his taxi, his mother, and his sexual preference, in true New York style, as saliva flew everywhere like a sprinkler. That show was worth the $18!

I don't know why the Bahamian government allows these taxi scams to go on, it just leaves a bad taste in the tourists' mouths, maybe they just don't care.  You're on vacation so it justifies it.  This is also a problem in Orlando at Disney World, Downtown Disney, and Pleasure Island. So moral of the story is you MUST be a lawyer to take a taxi in the Bahamas.  You must ask them before you board how much the ride is for the entire group, no per person rates, you want a flat rate for the vehicle to take you from point A to point B.  From Sandals to Crystal Palace should not be more than $5 for the entire group.  For a 15 minute taxi ride from Sandals to Atlantis, the rates are $15-$18 for the entire vehicle.  Don't let them sucker you into per person rates, or 4 of you will be paying $80 for a $20 taxi cab ride.  Ask the bus drivers they all know what it should cost.  Don't believe bellhops, they just guess.  It's a taxi conspiracy in the Bahamas, you must find out the price right from the horse's ass before you enter his taxi.

To get from Sandals to the Atlantis Casino, find other people and split a $15-$18 taxi ride.  You can take the local bus in front of Sandals for $1 which drops you off at Woodes Rogers Walk at the pier by the cruise ships (but it stops at 4 other Cable Beach resorts on the way.).  Once you are dropped off at the pier, then you have to take a $6 round trip ferry ride for 15 minutes over to Paradise Island, then it's a 10 minute walk to the Atlantis Resort from that dock.  During the day it's a fun cruise with friendly crewmen.  But once is enough for that trip. The taxi is the quickest way to the Atlantis Hotel from Sandals.

Sandals Packages
Shop around for Sandals rates, don't just call Sandals and don't just buy off their web site. They run specials at $300 -$500 off for long stays, but you'll still get a better price through your travel agent who buys the packages even cheaper from bulk wholesalers.  Most agents get your Sandals package through Gogo Travel, who buys wholesale blocks and sells them at a discount from what you would pay Sandals directly.  Sandals has a Hurricane Guarantee that gives you a free replacement vacation if a hurricane hits while you are staying at their resorts. But verify this on your own, in case they cancel this policy. Sandals room rates on their web site DO NOT include airfare. Have your travel agent hunt down a good airfare.

Sandals does not allow check in earlier than 3:00 PM NO EXCEPTIONS!
So don't choose a flight that will leave you sitting around the lobby of Sandals for hours waiting for your room to be ready.  Many people get stranded and it's humiliating after a long trip when you're ready to drop dead and you have no room to go to.

Beware that Sandals takes a lot of artistic freedom with photos in their brochures and airbrushes them to seem better than they are.  On their web site they airbrushed out all the houses next to the pink Manor Block building, and painted a green lawn to make the resort look secluded, which they are not. This should be illegal.  Our room overlooked some houses that were rundown.  It did not look like they showed on the web site.  I wish they'd stop these deceitful advertising tactics.  Also, in their brochure they touted Sandals Cay as a "Private off-shore Island".  But when we there, it was not exclusive to Sandals.  There was another operator on the island that ferries over hundreds of people from the cruise ships docked in Nassau to what I'm sure they misrepresented to them as a private island also.  That other company appeared to have the bigger chunk of the island.   Not so private after all. Get quotes from at least three travel agencies. You'll be surprised at the difference in cost quoted. Get pricing on the same package so you can compare apples with apples. If you are narrowed down to a resort and room type, get quotes on the same flight, same airline, and compare.

Show Me The Money
Don't bring any bills over $20 to the Bahamas, most businesses will not accept them.  I had a few $100 bills that the Crystal Palace Casino accepted.  But all other businesses had signs stating they don't accept $50 or $100 bills.  Tipping of any kind is strictly forbidden at Sandals, as 20% gratuity is included in your resort package.  But you'll be tipping taxi drivers, transport people, and other service personnel if you go off Sandals property.  I'd suggest getting one or 2 stacks of 50 $1 bills to handle all your tipping for the week.  Bring a bunch of $5 bills for tips also.

Flying To Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort
Many of you will probably fly out of New York or Miami.  We flew out of Fort Lauderdale in a Bahamas Air 737 and the flight was 35 minutes.  As soon as you reach altitude, you go right back down again for landing.  But if you fly in a Bahamas Air prop plane, the flight is an hour.  We prefer the jet planes to propeller planes as these smaller planes have too much vibration and prop noise.  During the hot months the prop planes get really hot and the AC is useless.

Brief Geography Lesson on the Bahamas
The Bahamas consist of 700 islands and very few of them are inhabited. If you have never flown to the Caribbean before, make sure you're sitting in a window seat, you're going to see the most beautiful islands and water on earth.  The ocean water around the Bahamas is completely different than any other ocean water.  It's incredibly clear due to the lack of any sediment sources, such as mountains or industrialized factories.  It has the most beautiful swirly blue, teal and green colors you'll ever see.  The ocean currents from Africa prevent any sediment from accumulating, so the water is crystal clear.  The finer grain sand in the Bahamas is not the same as the quartz sand we have here in the U.S., it's whiter.  Shellfish life forms die and leave calcium carbonate shells behind.  They are then eaten by parrot fish and other creatures, who excrete out the white sand particles.  All that white sand you walk on in the Bahamas has passed through the digestive track of a fish.  At Governor's Harbor on the island of Eleuthra east of Nassau they have pink sand.

Getting to Sandals From the airport
When you land at Nassau International, there's no smart carts for luggage so heed my advice.  You're on vacation, it's hot and muggy, your worn out from your wedding, don't do one bit of work at all from this point on.  There's guys at the luggage carousel with luggage carts so here's your chance to use the first of your $5 bills.  They'll wheel your luggage through customs, and then you go out the door into the main lobby where you'll see the Sandals desk.

A Rolls Is A Rolls, or is it?
At the Sandals desk inside the airport lobby they place labels with your room number on your luggage. They direct you outside to a third party transport taxi for your free transport to Sandals. If you have a high end suite, you get a free VIP Rolls Royce limo ride, so they claim.  If you're owed a Rolls, call Sandals BEFORE your trip to verify, and get the name of the employee you spoke with.  A friend of mine on his honeymoon the week after our vacation paid major bucks for a high end Honeymoon Villa Suite.  According to Sandals aggressive advertising, he was supposed to get the Rolls Royce ride at the Sandals airport counter they were unaware, and tried to talk him into taking a bus, making it look like they were doing him a favor.  He had to argue with them for 15 minutes and even showed his itinerary which itemized the Rolls Royce, and he finally won out.  We heard from a travel agent that other people fall victim to this Sandals scam as well. Total waiting time for my friend's Rolls?  1 hour, when it should have been waiting there for him.  When you pay good money for a vacation and a resort claims to be AAA 4 diamond, incidents like this make me question the rating criteria.  They know what room he's in, they know his flight number, why didn't they know he had a free VIP Rolls Royce?  I think they did know, they just try to weasel out and save themselves some money. That's just too sloppy.  Should be a no brainer for people who do this every day.  Duh, let's see Honeymoon Villa Suite... Free Rolls Royce. Repeat after me...

The point about the Rolls Royce was moot for us, our room does not get the Rolls Royce benefit, so we took the 15 minute van ride to Sandals from the airport.  We were miffed that the van driver would not leave the airport until he could drum up more business, which delayed us a half hour.  Sandals needs to address these issues, because people coming off flights are tired and don't want to wait around in the airport heat and gagging on fumes, they want to get to the resort.  You think you're getting a "Sandals shuttle", but you're not.  What you really get is a taxi van who is not working just for you.  Bad form.  Very bad form.

Arriving at Sandals
As you pull up the driveway at Sandals, you see a spectacular Romanesque yellow entrance with several statues leading up to 2 giant God statues, I think one of them is Poseidon.  The bell hop escorts you to the lobby where they check you in.  The courtyard that you pass has a fountain in the middle and statues in the corners. They give you a glass of champagne while you fill out forms and they take your credit card imprint.  Ask where the room is before they take you and if you don't like the sound of it, ask for another room view at that very time while they can still change it, not later. They give you a Sandals ID card to carry when you go outside the gate. YOU MUST CARRY THIS CARD WHEN YOU LEAVE OR YOU CANNOT GET BACK IN. The gift shop is outside the gate, and they do check you COMING BACK IN.  Our friends arrived at 1:00 PM and they were not allowed to check into their room.  Instead they were sent to the spa where they could "use the facilities" (translation: spend money on a massage).  All they wanted to do was sleep after a long trip.

Book all your off site excursions ASAP!
Be sure to stop at the tour desk and start booking excursions ASAP.  They are explained in this article, and the Dolphin excursions sell out rapidly.  You're not just competing with other Sandals guests for these slots, but all of the visitors on cruise ships and resorts.  Also, get yourself a copy of "What-To-Do" magazine.
If you are waiting for your room to be ready, this is a good time to start blocking off your reservations and excursions.

We got to our room and were immediately disappointed with the location.  We specified a pool view but ended up with a view of the run down houses next door that Sandals airbrushed out of the photo on the web site.  I called our suite concierge to get us another room or that elusive free upgrade that I keep hearing rumors about.  I asked for a room facing the pool.  I informed her that my wife was very pregnant needed to rest frequently, I wanted the best view for her, and we were repeat customers.  We deserved better than a view of the service road down below.  I got no where and was quite miffed about that. Remember, you're not in America, and they don't have to do anything to accommodate your requests, nor do they even have to honor their false advertising claims.  Terms like false advertising are not enforced down there, which shows you the true nature of hotels, when they are left unchecked without enforcing regulations. Hotel reservation systems are the most archaic technology on earth.  Why can't you specify where your room is going to be when they know months in advance who is checking out at any given day?  Systems should keep track of repeat customers and give them preference for room assignment, so booking the room you paid for does not become a crap shoot.  Every time I hear the word "can't" it just makes me laugh.  One reason I became an engineer was to design things that other lazy people say "can't" be done.  The word "can't" should not be in the vocabulary of a 4 diamond resort.

Front entrance

This is the view you see when you first arrive at Sandals.  Once your brain adjusts to the fact that you're driving up the wrong side of the driveway you see this spectacular Romanesque view as you pull up to the front entrance.

Courtyard

As you are escorted to the manor lobby to be checked in, you see more beautiful statues and fountains in the courtyard. The pink architecture is typical of the Bahamas, where many buildings are painted pink, blue, green, or yellow.

View from room

This is the view from our room, a "Honeymoon Ocean View Concierge" room on the 4th floor of the Manor House, the main pink building.  The view of the ocean was OK, but we also overlooked some rundown homes next door.   The pool side would have been  better.

Our patio angled east toward the ocean.  We missed the sunsets, but got the sunrises instead.  Rooms on the east side and west side of the 7 story Pink Manor Block Building are angled toward the ocean. There were 2 sinks and the bathroom was nicely appointed with marble and tile, and plumbing worked fine.  You only get 2 full sized bath towels per day so use them wisely.  What a joke, is this really a four star hotel? I expected more towels than that. Their hair dryer is a joke, so bring your own.  The fan on the back of my PC is stronger. They have a bar in the room, but don't ask for the key to open it, or I'm sure you'll find a charge on your bill for something.  Drinks are free at the bars, but if you want any finer wines with dinner, you have to pay for it.  I suggest packing bottles of your favorite wine or champagne before the trip to keep in your room.

Around the property, the pink villas were very nice looking.  They have lots of plush appointed landscaping.  People we know who stayed in them said they were nice.  A couple of semi private pools service these pink villas.  The large main pink Manor Block building had a fitness center on the 7th floor, accessed from stairs on the 6th floor.  It was better than I expected, with Cybex, my favorite equipment.  It was like I never left my gym, I used it a few times.  Even if you don't care to use the fitness center, you should get a look from the observation deck, with a good birds eye view of the resort.  The fitness center faces the ocean so while you are riding the bikes you stare out across the beautiful blue green water to Sandal's Cay 1/2 mile off shore.  With water in the Bahamas, the higher up you view it from, the better it looks.

Chess boardA nice view of one of the "Honeymoon Villa Suites" with a life sized chess set.  The gardens and walkways in between the villas are beautifully landscaped.  There's no ocean views at all from any of the villas, it's strictly "Garden View".  There's a couple of small pools that serve the honeymoon villas.

Manor block

A view of the pink Manor Block building viewed from the pier where the boat to Sandals Cay docks.  This is the building our room was in, on the back side.  The "Grande Luxe Ocean Front" Suites can be seen on the left side directly facing the ocean.  I'm sure they have a great view, but what a joke- no patios!  So they want you to pay $430 per person, per night, and no patio? The fitness center can be seen on the top floor on the left side of the building.

As a reference for comparison, this was the pool at Sandals St. Lucia when we stayed there in 1996.

If you end up in the Manor Block, you want a "Honeymoon Ocean View Concierge" room with a POOL VIEW, as shown middle of the pink building in the picture above.  The patios are angled toward the ocean, an ideal view for rooms of the Manor Block, as they overlook the pool, the pier, the 7 story mural, and the ocean.  The lack of patios on the ocean front rooms makes them not worth the extra price.  You want to relax on your patio and see the sunset.

Pooling The Resources
The pools at Sandals are impressive.  They have 2 main pools, 3 mini pools, a few whirlpools, and a unique misting pool.  People did not start to trickle down until after 9 AM, when the sun clears the top of the Manor Block to shine on the pool.  The best chairs have thick padding and there are only a few so try for those first.  Throw your towel on a chair and go eat breakfast.  Laying out at the pool in front of the pink Manor Block building is incredible when you look up and see the awesome giant mural painted on the side of the building that looks like a scene from the Garden Of Eden. You can get SCUBA certified in a pool next to the dive shop.  You'll love the swim up bars INSIDE THE POOL with underwater stools.  All the daiquiris and coladas come from a 7-11 slurpie type machine and they add a shot of Bacardi Rum, the local product of Nassau.  If you want non-alcoholic cocktails, they just leave out the liquor.  The coladas are nothing to write home about.  The only place you'll ever get a real pina colada is in Jamaica.

Pool fountain

The fountain next to the Royal Cafe Grill.  Note the lion head spitting out the water.  Nice touch.

Baccarats

A view of the pool from the fitness center observation deck.  The French restaurant Baccarat is in the pink with rounded windows.  Spices restaurant is on the left, and the Windsor Block is in the back.

Pool and Manor Block

A stunning view of the Manor Block building and the Windsor block pool.

Mural

Here's a great close-up of the mural on the Manor Building.  Nice mural!  the rooms to the right of it have a great view.

The Windsor Block building is newer and looks nicer than the Manor Block.  The lobby is nicer and the elevator area on each floor has big windows that offer you nice views of the pool and beach.  You MUST go check out the view from the roof where they have an observation deck.  Other guests told us the rooms were nice in this building.  One advantage of the Windsor Block is the patios are bigger than the patios in the pink Manor Block building.  Also, the Royal Windsor Ocean Front suites on the Windsor Block have huge wraparound patios.  That's the kind I'm talking about, they are huge suites and at the time in 2000, they were $600 per night.  That's what you want to get if you have the money to spend.

Pool at Manor Block
Manor Block pool looking toward the ocean.  That's the Sundowner swim-up pool bar in the back.  It has stools under water that you sit on while you drink at the bar, which just out into the pool.
Statues at Manor pool
Manor Block pool looking toward the Piano Bar.  Note the cool statues sitting in carved enclaves along the wall of the pool.  Very classy.  The columns that run out into the pool look like they are floating, a great optical effect.
Windsor pool and pier
A nice view from the observation roof deck of the Windsor Block Building.  You can see people at the swim up bar pool, the water was beautiful on this day.  That's Sandal's Cay 1/2 mile off shore, where Cafe Goombay and the private beach and pool are.

What sets this Sandals apart from the others is the blend of architectural styles. Every part of the resort that you walk through has a different style.  There's giant statues everywhere, and the pool next to the Windsor Block has lots of oversized planters scattered around the perimeter.  This provides many great spots to take photos at Sunset.

Mural
An excellent close up shot of the mural on the Manor Block Building.
Roman Statues
Nice Romanesque architecture in the breezeway between the theater and the Cricketers Club.  There's some really nice statues and paintings on the wall.
Windsor pool and pier
The "4 Ladies" located in front of the Windsor Block building by the pool.  Lots of couples made great use of this Kodak Moment spot.

The Spa at Sandals
They claim their spa was voted top Caribbean spa.  The design of the spa is very impressive.  As you head down the stairs to the spa you see 3 small pools, each at a different level, a design that looks really nice.  The spa has a beautifully designed marble and hardwood interior.  They have every known service you can think of.  I got the Swedish massage and reflexology sampler for $97 including the 15% automatic gratuity, probably much higher priced by now.  A regular Swedish massage was $80 with the 15% gratuity.  Both 55 minute massages were great, and they'll dig as hard or soft as you tell them to.  To be honest, the Spa was just as good as some of the better cruise ship spas that we have been in.  I highly recommend the reflexology if you work on a computer a lot, the hand and foot manipulations feel really good.  Be sure to drink lots of water immediately after any massage.

Sandal's Cay Semi-private Island
If the pools get crowded try for a little peace.  Take the 5 minute boat ride over to Sandal's Cay 1/2 mile away.  You need to get a towel from the towel hut before you go.  The boat leaves every hour so don't miss it or you'll have to wait.  You'll want to take the 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM boat over to the island before beach chairs fill up.  If you want to get a good spot at the lagoon, walk up the hill behind the restaurant and down the other side to the lagoon and choose a chair.  Then you can go get food or drinks.  There's also a pool with a swim up bar.  Cafe Goombay serves McDonald's quality food like hamburgers and hot dogs, nothing fancy.  The swim up bar serves the usual daiquiris and coladas out of the slurpie machine. Don't forget to put SPF 15 sun block on before you go to Sandals Cay. Apply it in your hotel room, as it takes a half hour to absorb into your skin and start protecting you. Be aware of boat boarding times, if you miss the time you wanted, you'll wait another hour for the next boat.

Beach at Sandals Cay
The lagoon on the beach at Sandal's Cay, 1/2 mile offshore.  When the boat docks, walk over the hill past the restaurant and to the beach.  The water is beautiful and clear.
Gazebo on Sandals Cay
A view from Sandals Cay looking toward Sandal's complex 1/2 mile away.  This is a wedding gazebo where brides & grooms can perform their ceremony.  Many brides and grooms do their weddingmoons at Sandals, we saw 3 or more ceremonies daily.
Horse Carriage
You can also do your wedding ceremony in this carriage located next to the tennis courts and honeymoon villas.

The Restaurants
The restaurants there are pretty good.  If you don't want to wait to be seated, get there between 6:30 and 7:00, no later. Let me warn you of one thing that Sandals does not adequately warn you about in the brochures.  The restaurants require men to wear good pants and nice shirts for dinner or they will refuse you.

I got booted from Baccarat the first night because I wore jeans and did not know better.  Make sure you have dress slacks for every night you are there.  Kimonos allows jeans but the others do not.  At 7 PM there is a 1 1/2 hour wait a Baccarat so get there by 6:30 if you want to eat there.  At 7:45, it's a 3 hour wait!  No thanks. We never made it in there, but I heard from more than one person that the food was not so great, especially for the wait.  I did eat breakfast in there a few times and loved it.  Ask for a table at the rounded windows overlooking the pool.

Kimonos is excellent, and the chef cooks on a stir fry table right in front of you Teppanyaki-style.  The food was plentiful there, and the services was incredible.  I had no room for desert so we split one between us.

The Crystal Room was pretty nice too, with elegant international dining.  The food was good and they have a nice dessert buffet in the middle of the room.  It's fun to watch the ladies scoping it out.

Casanova is a great northern Italian restaurant, and most guests agreed it was the best.

We never made it to Cafe Goombay as we were warned about the pterodactyl sized mosquitoes on Sandal's Cay at night.  They warn you to bring insect repellent, so that alone tells me it's not a place I want to eat dinner.  Our friends ate there and they were swatting mosquitoes the entire annoying dinner.  Sandals does not setup repellent candles, torches, zappers, screens, or anything, it's like being dropped off in Jurassic Park.  Our friends coined a good name for it:  Cafe GoomBug, or how about CaFly GoomBug.

One night we got an invitation to a dinner for repeat guests. There were 30 of us that attended at the ballroom in the Windsor building, with hors d'oeuvres served first then we moved into the ballroom and each table had a Sandal's manager.  At this dinner we had an excellent lobster appetizer, the only lobster we would see at Sandals.  That's one thing I can't understand about Sandal's is why they don't serve lobster when you are paying them thousands to stay there.  I keep hearing they can't get lobster in the Caribbean.  Guess they never heard of Florida lobster.  If they can fly Maine lobster to Miami, then they can fly it to Nassau too. At the dinner we learned their chefs are very well trained in the U.S.  Our head chef had come from Sandal's Antigua. That was the best meal we had there all week.

At night after dinner is when most of the couples stroll around the pools, checking out the sunset, some go to the piano bar, which has a grand piano in the middle of the room.  There's a wooden bar in the shape of the piano that goes around the piano, so you can sit right there with your drinks while the pianist plays.  There's also a billiards room
and the Royal Theater where they do talent shows and there's also the Night Club at the theater as well.

Sunset at the poolWhen you go to dinner, be sure to bring your camera to capture the awesome sunsets at Sandals.  The pool at the Windsor Block building faces the sunset perfectly.
Sunset at the Windsor pool
The most photographed view at Sandals.  Right at Sunset you'll see more couples trading cameras to photograph each other than anywhere else.

What to do in Nassau
We got you covered here because we've done many of the best excursions in Nassau.  The prices we show here are the prices they charged us in June, 2000.

Swim With The Dolphins ($149 Per person) and Dolphin Encounters ($75 per person)
This is the most incredible experience.  When else can you get the chance to swim with a dolphin or pet one in a pool?  The Swim sells out fast, they were sold out weeks beyond our visit, so we settled with the Dolphin Encounters instead. If you want "The Swim", call and book it 2 months before your trip.  No kidding. Forget about waiting for last minute cancellations, no one cancels.

The 20 minute ferry ride sails from the pier at Paradise Island next to Atlantis, and heads to Blue Lagoon Island (Salt Cay).  This island has a big beautiful teal lagoon.  There's also a beach and recreation area for another excursion that just takes you to the beach.  The "Dolphin Encounters" pools are where you stand up to your waist and get your picture taken with a dolphin, who kisses you for the photo.  Next they line you up in the pool to dance with the dolphin, feed him, pet him, he rolls over, you pet his belly, and he'll stand on his tail and hugs you.  The look on a little kid's face when the dolphin hugs them is priceless. Bring a waterproof camera if you plan to sit along the pool, as the dolphins splash everyone along the edge.  Do your filming from the deck 5 feet above the pool.  If you are able to book "The Swim with the Dolphins" package, you get a 30 minute swim with the Dolphins.  So Dolphin Encounters is almost as good, as you do get to touch the dolphins and play with them.  It was the best $75 per person we ever spent. Ask an employee to point out "Gilligan's Island", 2 miles away. That's where they filmed the exterior island shots for the popular 1960s TV show.

Dolphin Encounters Dolphin Encounters, one of the best excursions in Nassau.  You get to play in a 15' x 15' pool with a dolphin.  First they have you pose for pictures, and right as they take the picture the dolphin kisses you.
Lighthouse
A lighthouse  on a small island between Paradise Island and Blue Lagoon Island.  You pass it on the way to Dolphin Encounters, during your 20 minute ferry ride from the Paradise Island eastern bridge.  Be ready with your camera as you pass.

Shopping In Nassau
Everyone takes cruises to the Bahamas expecting to get their booze, perfume, watches, and precious gems at huge discounts.  I have heard from too many people that got burnt royally, because there are no laws protecting the American consumer in the islands.  Cruise ships that dock at port and take you to specific shops like to tout that they are the best shops that you are going to.  But remember that the shops paid for these arrangements, and the ads in the flyers in your stateroom.  You buy a bargain emerald in the Bahamas, bring it home for appraisal, and discover it belongs at K mart in the costume jewelry section.  Unless you go with a certified gemologist who knows what they are doing, and knows the cost, I would not consider buying gems in the islands. Not in a million years.  What kind of discount do you think you are going to get if you go to the more honorable stores like Cartier? This trip we didn't bother, it's just too insulting, and a waste of time.  For perfume, the average savings is $5-10 per bottle, about what you would save at factory outlet malls near your house.  You're certainly not going to Disney World on the savings.  Some business owners present you with outrageous offers, then drop way, way off that price.  Some liquor is cheaper, some is more.  It's a big tourist trap.  You might get some good clothing prices once you talk them down off their overblown prices.  My $75 Dolphin Encounters ticket provided much more entertainment than putting up with car dealer sales tactics.  My suggestion is not to waste time shopping there for big bargains that don't materialize, and do the excursions instead.  Every product in the Bahamas is shipped there, unless it's local art, so how could California wines be cheaper?

Robinson Crusoe ($45 per person)
They call it "Best snorkeling trip", but it was the worst snorkeling I've ever done.  The trip itself was fun, you leave the pier at Paradise Island on a triple decker boat.  Secure a nice beach chair on the top deck as soon as you get on the boat.  You cruise by George Myers's mansion (Myers's Rum), a sheik with an 18 car garage, and at the end of Paradise Island, a new community where Oprah, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Sharon Stone, and Sean Connery had houses built.  It's a breezy 50 minute cash bar boat ride to Rose Island where they have a nice beach and they feed you a buffet lunch.  There's hammocks in the woods to rest on and snorkel gear with life vests but no flippers.  What kind of tour takes you snorkeling but does not provide flippers?  Their beach there was beautiful and clear.  Where's the reef?  We saw not one single fish.   We did see some giant lizards on the island.  From the beach you can see "Gilligan's Island". After lunch came volleyball games. The crew were excellent players, and we had a great time.  I found out later from the tour operator that they were supposed to take us to the other side of the island where there was a reef to snorkel.  I don't know why that never happened.  It was a fun trip, but if you're looking to snorkel, don't do it on a booze cruise.  You need a real snorkel trip.  This was a fun beach picnic trip, not a snorkel trip.

Robinson Carusoe
The awesome beach on Rose Island, where you go for the "Robinson Crusoe".  If you look real closely at the photo, there's an island 2 miles off shore that was used for the exterior shots of the popular 60's TV show "Gilligan's Island".

Stuart Cove's Snorkeling Trips ($27 per person) & SCUBA Diving ($70 per person)
Now this is a snorkeling trip, the best I've ever done.  They pile 10-15 of you in a boat on the southeast shore of Nassau, and take you out not far from Lyford Cay to a beautiful offshore reef with thousands of fish where they have a permanent buoy to attach to.  You'll see the most beautiful parrot fish and other Caribbean fish that you just don't see in the lake behind your house.   They give you snorkeling lessons if you need it, they have masks, fins, and life jackets. See, now that's what I'm looking for. The crew was knowledgeable and friendly, and was concerned about us having the best time.  Remember I mentioned how crystal clear the water is in the Bahamas?  This makes snorkeling and SCUBA diving even more awesome.  If you're in 20 feet of water and the sun shines into it, it's like you're standing in front of an aquarium.  All your shots will come out because it's lit better. The area they took us to was used by lots of Hollywood movies for filming.  On the way back ask them to float real close to to the $60 million unique home of Canadian fashion designer Peter Nygard on Lyford Cay, they'll know what you're talking about.  See the photos below.  It's official title is Bahamas Luxury Nygard Cay, a 4.2 acre mega mansion at the end of Lyford Cay. It's relatively cheap to rent, at only $30,000 per day! It has 10 bedrooms, 5 pools, a tennis court, 2 volleyball courts, a basketball court, 7 boats, staff of 20, food and liquor included, 2 hummers, a 52' yacht, a 24 seat movie theatre, and exotic birds. Then they took us further out to sea where they let us feed the Caribbean sharks.  You can't do that on a booze cruise.  We are not divers but other divers told us it was awesome.  They take you to dive on shipwrecks, and you can see the James Bond plane that they sunk after filming.

Cool HouseOn the way back from snorkeling, make sure they take you by Peter Nygard's Bahamas Luxury Nygard Cay, a 4.2 acre mega mansion and estate at the end of Lyford Cay, the most unbelievable house you'll ever see.  He invented spandex (God bless this man)!  They say he worked on this house for 6 years at a cost of $60 million!  He just keeps adding more and more to it.  It looks like the Flintstones meets Gilligan's Island.  It's right on the western tip of Lyford Cay. Cool HouseHere's the back side of the house, where on the right side you can see he's building a giant Mayan temple in the backyard! Note the giant lookout tower on the left side of the picture.  Truly an unforgettable house.  One way or another you simply must get out to see this house.

SUB (Scenic Underwater Bubble) Bahamas ($89 per person)
This one looked absolutely incredible and we are doing it next time we go!  They fit you into a scooter that goes underwater and your head goes into the bubble where it's sealed and an oxygen tank feeds you air.  You're in water 15 deep and propelling yourself around.  There's no SCUBA or snorkeling experience necessary, the scooter does everything, and it looks awesome.  It's a must for people who want that close up view of the fish and coral.

Take A 1/2 Day Trip To Atlantis Resort!
We did that and have lots of pictures and stories to tell of this absolutely unbelievable experience.  There was too much for one paragraph here so we created a seperate trip report with excellent photos. Click Here To Read Our Trip Report On Atlantis Resort.

The Extended City And Country Tour ($28 per person)
We did this when we took a cruise to Nassau.  It's not an action packed excursion, just a simple tour for those who want to discover the major points of interest in Nassau like the forts, the famous Queen's Staircase, Government House, Gregory's Arch, and the water tower.  This extended  package also includes Ardastra Gardens & Zoo, which everyone should do at least once in their lives.  That's because you see the world famous marching flamingos. It's a cool show, amazing how well trained and synchronized the flamingos are.  You get to mingle amongst these 4-5 ft tall birds before the show, and hundreds of animals and acres of lush tropical gardens too.

Hartley's Undersea Walk ($55 per person)
This one is really cool.  We did not have time, but we'll do it next time.  They take you out on a boat to water 12 feet deep, and put these helmets on you that seal around your shoulders and feed you air through hoses that go up to the surface.  Then you step down a ladder to the bottom and walk around. I've seen it on cable TV shows, it looks really cool. You can sit on the ocean floor and the guide shows you where to walk on the bottom to feed the coral animals.  You don't even have to know how to swim, because you are walking on the bottom with your helmet on!

Sea World Explorer ($39 per person)
We did not get to do this one, but it's on our list for our next trip to Nassau.  You cruise in a boat that has windows all along the hull.  The boat slowly cruises by the reefs of Nassau Harbor so you can get a close up view of the gorgeous Bahamian marine life.

Important Tips During Your Stay At Sandals Royal Bahamian:
Get a pair of the best sunglasses you can afford with the most UV A & B protection you can get.  The Caribbean sun is very powerful because it's closer to the equator.  It's much more powerful than it is near your house, I can guarantee you that, and you must have eye protection.  Remember, UV damage is cumulative.

Always use sunscreen!!! The sun is very hot and brutal, at 90 F.  Use a sunscreen with AT LEAST SPF=15.  Anything less is not good enough.  Put it on before you leave your room in the morning and at least one other time during the day.  There's no room for macho attitudes here, human skin is made out of the same substance for all of us, men or women and it does burn.  You won't feel it until 3 hours later, but you'll feel it.  Don't say that you'll just lay out for 30 minutes first and then put on lotion, because 30 minutes is too long, and you'll fall asleep and forget.

Get to the pool by 9:00 AM to claim lounge chairs. Leave a towel or something indicating the chair is reserved. On a fair weather day, the good lounges are gone by 9:00 AM, and if you haven't claimed a spot by 9:30 AM, forget about getting ANY spot at all at the pool. Most people are eating breakfast by 8:30 AM.

Things we loved about Sandals Royal Bahamian:
Food and drinks abound!! Go to any bar in Sandals and order any drink you want without having to pay for it, or tip the bartender.

The service of the employees was really good.  They all greet you, and even if they step in front of you by mistake, they all apologize.  In Kimonos the service was incredible.  I just saw a blur of hands that made sure our drinks were always full and the courses and plates changed like a well oiled machine.

Casanova and The Crystal Room had great food and service was impeccable.  No Lobster though.

The no tipping rule. It's great leaving your room with no cash, not worrying about change for tips.

The swim up bars bars that extend out into the pools with  under water stools. And don't forget the gazebos, hammocks, 10 foot chessboard, and water falls in the pool.

Super friendly staff. The maids were very thorough.

Lots of events to keep you busy: Pool Volleyball, nighttime events, beer drinking contests (it's more fun to watch), dancing at night. All the other couples are really friendly.

Things we did not like about Sandals

You heard me moan about it before, I won't dwell on it, but we specified a room with a pool view and felt let down when they refused to do anything about it.  Room assignments at Sandals are too much of a crap shoot. They are inflexible about room assignments.

Can't make reservations in the restaurants.  What's up with that?  At Sandals St. Lucia, most of the restaurants were done by reservation, why not at Royal Bahamian?  Without it, your schedule of fun gets derailed.

The free public shuttle to the Crystal Palace casino only runs every hour.  That makes balancing dinner and gaming a difficult task.  Half the cab drivers try to rip you off on the 1 mile ride up the street to the casino.  One charged $18 to drive 1 mile. They need to run this shuttle every half hour at least.  People were queued up for taxis.

The one hour wait in between boat rides to Sandal's Cay.  One time the boat was 20 minutes late so we waited 1 hr and 20 minutes instead.  You don't want to be waiting on your vacation.  They need to have that boat going every 30 minutes at least, or get 2 boats crossing each other back and forth like they do at Disney World resorts.

None of the restaurants accepted reservations.  Cafe GoomBay on the Sandal's Cay took reservations, but who wants to fight off mosquitoes as you eat?

Not enough towels in your hotel room bathroom.  Only 2 full sized towels, plus hand towels.  Should be 4 towels at the very least for the amount they charge.

You'll never get a lobster dinner at Sandals.  Sometimes they have some shrimp that they call "mini shrimp", but it's really micro shrimp.  For the amount of money you pay, they need to ante up.

Time to go back home
When you check out of Sandals, check your bill carefully. When we stayed at St. Lucia years before they added a $30 charge to our room for a long distance call to New York city, which we did not make. We had to make a big scene for them to drop the charge. I read another online trip report where the author reported the same thing, so stay sharp.  Don't do express check out unless you can view your bill, the regular checkout only takes a couple of minutes and you get to view the itemized bill with no surprises. Once you are gone, there's nothing you can do about it.

Make sure you call the bell hops at least one hour before your shuttle time so they can get your bags from your room.  We called them 1/2 hour before, and they kept our shuttle waiting 20 minutes!  Come on, it takes 5 minutes to wheel a cart up and get the luggage, and they did not look busy because there were 3 of them standing around.  I could have just brought them down myself much faster. Take the shuttle or Rolls Royce back to the airport, and make sure your customs form is already filled out before you get to the counter.  Don't forget there's a fee per person to leave Nassau, so hopefully you have plenty of cash left over!  All flights close 45 minutes before their departure time, so for God's sake, waste no time getting in line when you get there, or you'll be shut out.  As you fly out, you'll once again enjoy the most beautiful teal green blue oceans and islands on earth with striking white cream like "oolies" swirling in between the islands, and when you get back home, you'll have a story to tell your friends.
